Truman State University invites applications for the position of Advising Specialist for the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achivement Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education to effectively prepare eligible Truman students for graduate education leading to doctoral degrees. The McNair Advising Specialist is a full-time position that provides academic, career, and graduate school counseling services to first-generation, low-income and underrepresented minority students with the goal that they are admitted to graduate programs with funding and remain enrolled until the attainment of a PhD degree. The Advisor will co-teach a 3-credit Graduate School Preparation course and assist in the recruitment and selection of program participants as well as develop educational action and progress monitoring plans for each program participant.

Required Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in education, psychology, counseling, or related field
  • Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software as well as social media platforms
  • Ability to work responsibly with sensitive and confidential information
  • Ability to be organized and to communicate effectively on a daily basis
  • Ability to relate to Truman McNair Program participants from diverse backgrounds and the academic, financial, and social barriers they face

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of teaching and advising experience, especially in the higher education context
  • Ability to facilitate graduate level study and time management habits
  • Experience with grant-funded and/or TRIO or similar programs
  • Ability to use critical thinking skills to solve problems and to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Superior organization, interpersonal, and communication skills.
