Truman State University is seeking applicants for the position of Dean of the School of Health Sciences and Education.

The School: The School of Health Sciences and Education consists of approximately 75 faculty members in four academic departments, including Communication Disorders, Education (Elementary, Secondary, Special Education, and Counseling), Health and Exercise Sciences (including Athletic Training), and Nursing. In addition, the School supports a variety of outreach programs including the Regional Professional Development Center (a state-funded program providing services to the K-12 schools in Northeast Missouri), off-campus classes in the St. Louis metropolitan area, an outpatient Speech and Hearing Clinic, and others.

The Community: Located in Northeast Missouri, Kirksville is a cultural and economic hub in the region. In addition to Truman, Kirksville is the birthplace of osteopathic medicine and has a medical school, dental school, and community college. The Kirksville School District is consistently recognized for academic excellence, and the community takes pride in several annual events including the Red Barn Arts and Crafts Festival, the NEMO Triathlon, and the Red, White, and Blue Festival. Responsibilities of the Position:

The Dean provides leadership for the School of Health Sciences and Education and works with department chairs, faculty and staff to achieve the goals of the School and the University. The Dean is committed to helping Truman students achieve essential learning outcomes in all aspects of their education at the University and, in particular, is committed to the value that a liberal arts and sciences education contributes to student development. The Dean must be an individual with a high standard of personal and professional ethics and integrity who will work collaboratively with department chairs and faculty to articulate a vision for the School that is consistent with the mission of Truman State University, including goals for inclusivity and diversity. The Dean will supervise and evaluate the performance of department chairs and faculty within the School.  The Dean will promote teamwork and continuous improvement among students, faculty and staff and provide intellectual leadership for the School. The Dean will promote assessment as a means of measuring progress toward School and University goals, and develop strategies to secure external resources to support both School and University programs. The Dean is committed to faculty and staff development and adopts strategies to support faculty teaching, scholarship and service consistent with the Teacher-Scholar model. The Dean reports to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, serves on Truman’s Deans’ Council and performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President and President of the University.

Required Qualifications:

  • A record of commitment to and understanding of the liberal arts and sciences and public higher education;

  • A terminal degree in one of the disciplines represented in the School or in a related field;

  • A record of successful teaching, scholarship and service sufficient to qualify the candidate for appointment at the rank of tenured full professor in one of the departments within the School;

  • Experience working with external university constituencies including alumni, donors and private foundations;

  • Demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of each of the departments in the School including but not limited to the process of external accreditation;

  • A record of  promoting diversity;

  • Success securing external grants, especially those funding programs involving multiple constituencies or academic units;

  • Experience developing and managing budgets;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; and

  • Academic and/or administrative experience in at least one of the disciplines represented in the School
