Truman State University seeks a diverse pool of applicants for a non-tenure track position in Justice Systems to start August ­­­2019.  The successful applicant has the possibility of reappointment for up to three additional years (9-month contracts), depending on performance, department needs, and funding.

Responsibilities:  Provide classroom instruction in lower and upper program curriculum including in the areas of Administration of Justice and Law Enforcement; fulfill additional faculty duties appropriate to the teacher-scholar model; collaborate in the ongoing assessment of the program; contribute to inclusive excellence both in the department and across campus; participate in departmental activities including student recruitment; and perform other regular service to the university.

Required Qualifications:

  • Requires a Masters in Criminal Justice or Criminology or a closely related field (ABD status or Ph.D. preferred)

Applicants will be evaluated on:

  • academic qualifications;
  • compatibility with the department’s instructional needs,
  • teaching background or the potential for teaching introductory courses, law enforcement, victimology, organization and management, and advanced seminars,
  • evidence of teaching effectiveness, including potential for developing critical thinking and problem solving skills in undergraduates,
  • experience in policing, the judiciary, and/ or corrections work beyond academic credentials,
  • evidence of commitment to liberal arts education, including but not limited to interest and background in interdisciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary teaching, scholarship, and service,
  • experience supporting diversity and inclusion, and
  • strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Compensation and Rank:  Salary for this position is $40,000; benefits package includes health insurance, retirement contributions, and partial reimbursement of moving expenses. 

Program: Justice Systems is located in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Justice Systems that is part of the School of Social & Cultural Studies. The Department has 9 full-time faculty members and approximately 150 undergraduate Justice Systems majors. The Justice Systems major stresses a broad knowledge base in criminal justice, a gradual and cumulative building of research and communication skills, high expectations of students, and a commitment to liberal learning in general.
