DEPARTMENT:                  The Institute for Academic Outreach and the School of Health Sciences and Education

HOURS/WEEKS:               Part-Time / Adjunct

THE CONTEXT:  The Institute for Academic Outreach seeks to provide support for the broader mission of Truman State University and respond to a changing economic and public educational climate in the United States.  Among the programs operated by the Institute is a program which provides graduate-level professional development coursework to K-12 educators – both online and in physical locations in larger metropolitan areas in Missouri.  The Institute administers the program on behalf of the School of Health Sciences and Education in support of Truman’s statewide liberal arts and sciences mission and continued desire to support alumni in their professional lives.

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Institute seeks qualified faculty to teach graduate-level professional development courses in their area(s) of expertise.  Selected faculty will teach one or more three-credit hour courses on a topic(s) of interest to K-12 educators, administrators, or support staff.  While the preference is for instructors who can build and lead courses online, or in a hybrid (online and face-to-face) fashion, faculty who prefer face-to-face instruction will also be considered.  Faculty must be comfortable offering courses at the graduate level which are comparable in rigor to Truman’s on-campus graduate offerings and must have schedules that will permit them regular contact with students in keeping with nationally-accepted best practices of continuing, professional, and distance education.

  • A Master’s degree in Education or a related field.

  • At least five years of instructional experience at the primary and/or secondary school level.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with major trends in primary and secondary education.

  • A course proposal (see attached form) which fills a demonstrated professional development need in the marketplace and exhibits hallmarks of quality.

  • A PhD or EdD in Education or a related field.

  • Experience teaching in an online or hybrid online learning environment.

  • Experience teaching undergraduate or graduate level coursework.

  • Experience teaching or training fellow educators, administrators, or support staff.

COMPENSATION:  Temporary part-time instructors are compensated based on a fixed scale determined by the number of credit hours taught, the degree held by the faculty member, and the years of service at the Institution.

THE UNIVERSITY:  A vibrant communication of teacher-scholars with a highly-selective student body, Truman is a residential university focused on providing its approximately 6,000 students with broad liberal arts experiences and depth of study in 48 undergraduate majors and 9 graduate programs.  Truman is nationally recognized for the equality of the educational opportunities it offers students and for its leadership in the assessment of student learning and continuous improvement.  For the nineteenth consecutive year, Truman, Missouri’s public liberal arts and sciences university, has been recognized as the No. 1 Public University in the Midwest Region – Master’s Category by U.S. News & World Report.  Located in Kirksville, Truman plays a vital role in the life of a thriving rural community served by commuter air service and Amtrak.  More information about Truman State University can be found at www.truman.edu and the positions at http://secure.truman.edu/positionlistings/faculty.asp.
