The Director of Public Relations will lead and manage the university’s external communications and media relations – building, maintaining and preserving a positive public image for the university.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains staff in the department.
  • Oversees and directs the daily workflow of the public relations department, which may include managing staff assigned to assist with related projects.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manages media relations for the university, which may include organizing press conferences.
  • Acts as the university’s spokesperson and responds to members of the media in a timely manner; composes, reviews, and/or distributes press releases.
  • Reviews and approves or facilitates review and approval process for public communications regarding the university.
  • Oversees external, public-facing communication and branding in various online and print platforms, such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, and industry magazines.
  • Develops and implements media, social media, and public relations strategy to communicate the vision of the university.
  • Collaborates with other teams in the development and maintenance of the university’s website.
  • Produces, reviews, and/or distributes print and video materials for public distribution.
  • Collaborates with executive leadership and/or other stakeholders to develop a public information strategy and guidelines for the university.
  • Assists executive leadership in developing presentations, speeches, and other important public messages and provides training, as necessary.
  • In consultation with senior leadership, develops messages and talking points for internal audiences to introduce, champion, and reinforce university initiatives, values, and priorities.
  • Develops and maintains positive professional relationships with members of the media.
  • Develops, implements, and adheres to the communications budget.
  • Crisis communications – develops, communicates, and leads processes by which the university communicates externally in times of crisis, potential crisis, or emergency.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to write in a journalistic style that is customary for external publications.

  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Ability to offer sound media relations advice to senior leadership.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing, or related field required.
  • Three to five years of experience in public relations, communication, or related field required, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience in higher education preferred.
