HVAC Technician

FUNCTION OF THE JOB:  Reports directly to the Systems Trades Supervisor and is responsible for maintenance, repair, modification and installation of heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air conditioning systems on campus.



  1. Trouble-shoot malfunctioning HVAC and refrigeration systems and perform appropriate adjustments and repairs to restore proper function.
  2. Work on all components of HVAC and refrigeration systems, including controls, fans, dampers, ductwork, terminal boxes, motor drives, heating and cooling coils, piping and valves, condensers, compressors, chillers, boilers, heat exchangers, etc.
  3. Modify existing and install new HVAC and refrigeration systems as assigned by the supervisor.
  4. Train, oversee and advise mechanical trades specialists in various aspects of building air conditioning repairs, replacement and rebuilding.
  5. Provide recommendations to supervisor concerning evaluation, prioritization and implementation of the off-season air conditioning maintenance program.
  6. Review and inspect emergency repairs performed by outside contractors.
  7. Review design drawings and specifications for new or remodeled building air conditioning units.
  8. Provide records of all refrigerant use to HVAC Controls technician.
  9. Complete work order documentation upon completion of work.
  10. Initiate requests for necessary parts and supplies.
  11. Maintain orderly storage of tools, materials and equipment.
  12. Clean shop areas as needed.
  13. Be available for emergency night calls.
  14. Be available for overtime and weekend scheduled events.
  15. Assume all other reasonable duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Systems Trades Supervisor, including some maintenance duties outside of specialty.



  1. Must have the ability to read and understand technical manuals and drawings, product instructions and cautions, work orders and work safety procedures.
  2. Must have the ability to use hand and power mechanical trade tools and equipment
  3. Must have the ability to lift 80-lbs.
  4. Must have the ability to climb ladders and work from elevated platforms.
  5. Must have the ability to understand and follow instructions given by the supervisor.
  6. Must have the ability to communicate using a portable radio.



3 years prior professional work experience on complex mechanical/electronic equipment systems and their controls is required.  (Up to 1 year of related vocational training may substitute for the same length of work experience.)  Refrigeration license required.  Work history showing dependability and strong work ethic required. Ability to obtain a valid driver’s license required.  HVAC repair work experience preferred.
