Truman State University seeks a diverse pool of applicants for a non-tenure track faculty position in Communication to begin August 2020.  The successful applicant has the possibility of reappointment for additional years (9-month contracts), depending on performance, department needs, and funding.


Responsibilities:  Provide classroom instruction in lower and upper division Communication curriculum; fulfill additional faculty duties; and provide service to the University and community.


Required Qualifications:  Requires a MA in Communication or related field; Ph.D. preferred.


Applicants will be evaluated on:

  • academic qualifications,
  • compatibility with department needs,
  • teaching background or the potential for teaching courses in meeting the oral communication component in the core curriculum (public speaking, interpersonal communication and/or oral advocacy and debate),
  • evidence of teaching effectiveness, including potential for developing critical thinking and problem solving skills in undergraduates,
  • evidence of commitment to liberal arts education, including but not limited to interest and background in interdisciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary teaching, experience supporting diversity and inclusion,
  • strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.


Compensation and Rank:  This is an entry-level academic position with commensurate rank and salary of $42,000 for PhD; benefits package includes health insurance, retirement contributions, and reimbursed assistance for moving expenses.

Program:  The Communication major allows students to choose from three emphases: Communication Studies, Journalism, and Public Communication. The Public Communication emphasis combines theoretical perspectives with experiential and service learning. The Journalism emphasis is founded on convergent media principles and disciplines. More than 180 students major in Communication, along with 40 minors; moreover, the courses in the oral communication component of the core curriculum serve the entire University.
