Counselors provide short-term individual counseling, group counseling, relationship counseling, crisis intervention services, consultations to members of the campus community; and conduct outreach, training and assessment activities. Counselor hours must be flexible as some evening and weekend work may be required. Counselors report to the Assistant Director of UCS.  This is a 12-month position with full-time benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provides individual, couples and group mental health counseling for diverse student population

  2. Provides crisis assessment, intervention and consultation services

  3. Prepares and presents psycho-educational and prevention programming

  4. Consults with campus personnel, students’ family members, Students of Concern team, and other stakeholders

  5. Contributes to gathering data, compiling information, and preparing reports

  6. Maintains counseling documentation and records in accordance with legal and ethical standards and UCS policies and practices

  7. Participates with colleagues on campus committees and initiatives

  8. Acts as a resource and/or mentor for colleagues

  9. Assumes other responsibilities assigned by the Associate VP for Student Health & Wellness

  10. Participates in regular staff meetings, case conferences, liaison activities and staff development activities

  11. Participation in the on-call crisis counselor rotation (carry on-call phone and maintain 24 hour responsibility for one week at a time for approximately three weeks per semester).

  12. Demonstrates commitment to the mission of Truman State University

  13. Implements strategies and programs consistent with Student Affairs priorities

  14. Demonstrates exceptional “customer service” for their area in order to address the needs of various constituencies who utilize programs and services

  15. Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in Counseling, Psychology or Clinical Social Work or closely related field, conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education

  • Licensed or able to obtain a Missouri clinical license within first three years of employment

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written communication

  • Ability to create trusting, supportive relationships

  • Candidates must have had a supervised internship, clinical field placement or practicum experience as part of their degree requirements.

  • A demonstrated ability to work well in a team and skill in educational programming is also required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience in a university/college counseling center setting working with young adults and a diverse population

  • Understanding of developmental issues facing college students

  • Comfortable in the use of computer technology (Titanium software, email, web pages, Power Point, web-based surveys) to enhance services and outreach to students and campus

  • Possesses knowledge of best practices and desire to learn and incorporate new service methods

  • Preferred candidates will demonstrate knowledge and expertise in the assessment and treatment of various mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, autism spectrum and personality disorders.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of state and federal health care privacy laws, Title IX, VAWA, ADA, Title II, HIPAA, FERPA, and professional ethics

  • Experience performing threat assessments
