The Instructional Designer will be part of the University’s Learning Technologies Team, which provides assistance with all aspects of course/curriculum development as well as technology mediated instruction.  The unit supports the use and implementation of instructional technology in on-ground and online classrooms, maintains online resources and materials, and supports formal/informal learning space design.  The staff also maintains expertise in a wide variety of eLearning tools, courseware, software applications and other instructional services.

The successful candidate for this position will be a highly collaborative individual who is service- and communication-oriented and technically capable. This position will report to the Director of Learning Technologies and the Associate Provost.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist individual faculty in the design and development of engaging, interactive and instructionally sound online course materials for on-ground, online, and hybrid courses.

  • Research and produce clear documentation, training, and other instructional materials (websites, multimedia and online tutorials) to support the use of technology in teaching & learning, learning theory, accessibility & usability, and curriculum development.

  • Use applications such as desktop content authoring tools, document creation applications and presentation tools to develop custom products to meet user needs.

  • Collaborate with all stakeholders to support the established quality assurance process for courses and instructional materials.

  • Be involved with training and managing student workers, graduate assistants and interns.

  • Support the operations of Information Technology Services and collaborate with colleagues on departmental and institution-wide projects.

  • Remain current on emerging technologies that have potential value for teaching and learning through team communication, presentations, training sessions, conferences and publications.

  • Integrate Section 508 standards in online courses.

  • Build and maintain positive, effective working relationships with constituencies across the Campus.

  • Manage timeline and deliverables to meet deadlines and complete projects.

  • Engage as assigned or directed in other duties, special projects and, professional development initiatives individually or with colleagues.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Educational Technology or a related field AND at least two years’ experience providing educational technology development services; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Experience with the online delivery of education that includes familiarity with a learning management system (Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Canvas, Moodle, etc.) for instruction and course/program development.

  • Knowledge and application of best practices for the effective use of a range of digital tools to support learning, communication and knowledge development, such as online collaborative tools, learning management systems, and multimedia development.

  • Highly developed communication skills (oral, written, and interpersonal) with the demonstrated ability to provide excellent service and work effectively with diverse constituencies.

  • Teaching, training, or facilitation experience in a formal setting, such as, but not limited to, an academic institution, corporate training environment, or non-profit environment.

  • Collaborative mindset with an innate curiosity for learning, ability to embrace change and adapt to new technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using and/or supporting accessible technologies; experience with course development using Universal Design for learning principles.

  • Experience integrating open educational resources and/or open pedagogies into course design.

  • Experience with peer-review processes for evaluating online and hybrid courses, such as Quality Matters (QM) or OLC Scorecard.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design and of online pedagogical approaches, practices, and tools.

  • Previous professional teaching and/or training experience.

  • Prior experience using learning management systems (e.g. Google Classroom, Blackboard, or Canvas), Zoom, originality checking tools, classroom response systems, video management systems, and similar tools preferred.

  • Knowledge and experience in the educational applications of social media technologies.

  • Demonstrated ability managing multiple projects and prioritizing competing demands to meet established timelines.
