Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (10 month), Student Health Center

Function of the Job: 

Nurse practitioners and physician assistants perform health assessments, diagnose and treat patient illness, provide wellness exams and perform preventive screenings. They provide consultations to members of the campus community and conduct outreach activities. The nurse practitioner or physician assistant reports to the Clinic Supervisor of the Student Health Center (SHC). This is a 10-month position with full-time benefits.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs health assessments, including patient history and physical examination, and formulates appropriate diagnoses.
  2. Performs diagnostic procedures, according to expertise & collaborative practice arrangements. Performs preventive screening according to age and history.
  3. Orders and evaluates diagnostic tests and incorporates them into plan of care.
  4. Plans and provides care, within the framework of policies, collaborative agreement, available resources, and applying relevant research. Involves the client in planning care.
  5. Prescribes pharmacologic & non-pharmacologic therapies.
  6. Provides patient education related to health status.
  7. Collaborates appropriately with all members of the health care team.
  8. Participates in the education of health care professionals and students through mentoring, precepting and making formal presentations.
  9. Maintains legal & ethical practice as per regulatory and professional guidelines
  10. Role models professional behavior in all situations.
  11. Participates in interdepartmental case conferences
  12. Consults with campus personnel, students’ family members, Students of Concern team, and other stakeholders
  13. Maintains documentation and records accurately and in a timely fashion in accordance with legal & ethical standards and SHC policies and practices
  14. Participates with colleagues on campus committees and initiatives  
  15. Acts as a resource and/or mentor for colleagues  
  16. Assumes other responsibilities assigned by the Assoc VP for Student Health & Wellness
  17. Participates in regular staff meetings and staff development opportunities
  18. Demonstrates commitment to the mission of Truman State University
  19. Implements strategies and programs consistent with Student Affairs priorities.
  20. Demonstrates exceptional “customer service” in order to address the needs of various constituencies who utilize programs and services
  21. Other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications:

  • Maintains current Missouri RN licensure and nurse practitioner specialty certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center or other national credentialing body or board certification and state licensure as a physician assistant.
  • Masters or doctoral degree in nursing or masters or doctoral degree as a physician assistant from an accredited degree-granting institution of higher education.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team & commitment to diversity.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience in a university/college health center working with young adults and a diverse population
  • Understanding of developmental issues facing college students
  •  Comfortable in the use of computer technology  
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of state and federal health care privacy laws, Title IX, VAWA, ADA, Title II, HIPAA, FERPA, and professional ethics
