The International Student Advisor performs a broad range of duties designed to meet the needs of international students and fulfill the reporting requirements of the institution. The position reports to the Executive Director of International Education and works to enhance the transition, integration and success of international students on campus.

The successful candidate is expected to perform the following duties:

  • Advise international students on personal, social, academic, immigration and adjustment issues

  • Provide continuous education to international students on immigration regulations, policies and procedures

  • Learn, interpret and apply federal regulations and compliance processes pertinent to F-1 & J-1 immigration status and SEVIS

  • Develop written and video instructions for students to apply for benefits related to their visa, such as optional practical training, need-based work permit, change of immigration status and extension of stay

  • Develop pre-orientation, arrival, check-in, in-person and online orientation materials and processes for new internationals

  • Complete the SEVIS registration process for all F-1 and J-1 international students each semester

  • Under the direction of the university’s Primary Designated School Official, serve as an F-1 Program Designated School Official (DSO) and a J-1 Program Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO)

  • Assist students in understanding college policies and procedures as well as facilitate required immunizations, testing and enrollment

  • Serve as a resource to academic departments in support of international students in the various majors

  • Serve as liaison and resource to university offices and departments on campus to inform/advocate for the needs of international students

  • Plan and implement various programming activities including intercultural programming, special topic workshops and joint programming with other campus or community entities

  • Support the needs of international students and work to make the Truman campus international student friendly

  • Oversee programming for international students and diversity-related activities on campus and in the community

  • Monitor academic progress of international students and provide timely intervention and support service referrals as needed

  • Provide crisis management as needed

  • Coordinate the international student insurance program

  • Hire, train and supervise student employees involved in student support in the Center for International Students and in the various external support teams.

  • Undertake professional development opportunities on behalf of Truman including regional and state meetings and conferences

  • Develop and update content for the current student portion of the international student web page

  • Develop content to update international students regularly via newsletter and social media

  • Undertake domestic and international travel if needed to assist with international student recruitment efforts

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

  • Must be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident and must be able to pass a background check

Programs: The Office of International Education encompasses the Center for International Students and the Center for International Education Abroad. The Center for International Students Education functions as both the international recruitment and admissions office and the center for international student advising and support. The Center for International Education Abroad facilitates short-term and semester study abroad experiences for Truman students.
