The Institute for Academic Outreach is an office dedicated to the promotion of engaging learning experiences that extend beyond the traditional academic opportunities at Truman State University.  The programs offered through the Institute serve learners from a variety of walks of life: pre-college learners, adult learners seeking professional development and continuing education, and lifelong learners looking for personal enrichment.  Part of the Institute’s mission is to bolster recruitment efforts while fostering and supporting new modes of course delivery.

The Student Support Specialist plays a key role in recruiting and retaining students engaged in lifelong learning activities at Truman State University.  In this capacity they support: Truman’s Early College program, serving high school students taking college coursework; online graduate students who are furthering their education and training as adults; and middle school and high school students participating in Truman’s summer academies, including the Joseph Baldwin Academy, ATSU-Truman Healthcare Academy, and JBA, Jr. 

Responsibilities:

  • Process inquiries and applications to Early College

  • Provide guidance on course selection and applicability of course choices to future Truman enrollment for current and prospective Early College students

  • Provide support to Early College students in fully leveraging the services of the University

  • Provide support to Online Graduate Students in fully leveraging the services of the University and employing effective skills for online success

  • Maintain a high level of customer service and respond to all queries in a timely manner

  • Advise students about policies, procedures, degree requirements, and related academic matters

  • Communicate regularly with students and build relationships with educational partners through email, phone, video, and/or in-person contacts

  • Serve as a primary guide for students, ensuring they remain on track to complete their educational goals

  • Assist the Coordinator of Summer Academies and Institutes in responding to summer academy inquiries; facilitating applications; preparing requisitions; and other necessary duties

  • Supervise student workers

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Ability to work collegially and independently

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Interpersonal skills

  • Organizational and management skills

  • Strong computer proficiency and ability to learn and work with various software programs

  • Strong customer service mentality

  • Attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree

  • Work experience in an educational setting advising students

  • Experience as a student in an online course
