FACULTY POSITION IN HISTORY

Truman State University seeks a diverse pool of applicants for a full-time tenure-track assistant professor in modern US history, preferred fields in ethnicity and race relations or class and labor relations, to begin August 2021. 

Responsibilities:  Teaching lower-level surveys in US and modern world history, upper-division major electives in nineteenth- or twentieth-century US history, and graduate courses in nineteenth- or twentieth-century US history; maintaining a research program as a Teacher-Scholar; contributing to university-wide interdisciplinary programs; fulfilling additional faculty duties (such as academic advising, mentoring of students in research and other high impact experiences); and providing service to the university and community.

Required Qualifications:  This position requires a PhD in US History or closely related field.

Applicants will be evaluated on:

  • Academic qualifications.
  • Evidence of, or potential for, success in teaching excellence (successful candidate must be prepared to teach US and modern world history surveys; a variety of major electives including modern US historiography, research courses, and senior capstone; and graduate seminars). The successful candidate would be expected to be familiar with on-ground, hybrid, and online teaching pedagogies.
  • Evidence of, or potential for, mentoring high-impact experiences, such as research at both the undergraduate and graduate level, utilizing existing library collections; engaging students in service learning; teaching in desirable subfields (e.g., digital and public, disability, or environmental history) or geography (including GIS); and/or administering a vibrant internship program.
  • Evidence of commitment to liberal arts education, with undergraduate student development and accomplishment, particularly in critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Evidence of, or potential for, providing effective academic and career advice to undergraduate majors.
  • Interest and background in interdisciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary teaching (including contributing to a required Junior Interdisciplinary Seminar and interdisciplinary minors),
  • Commitment to maintaining a strong research agenda with demonstrated publishing record or prospects for significant scholarly contributions and with ability to supervise student research
  • Evidence of, or potential for, meaningful service to the university, the discipline, and/or the community.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Compatibility with the department’s needs; complementing existing faculty strengths in terms of class coverage.

Compensation and Rank:  This is an entry level position with a salary of $50,500; the benefits package includes health insurance, retirement contributions, and reimbursed assistance for moving expenses.

Program: The Department of History is part of the School of Social and Cultural Studies.  The department has 8 fulltime faculty members, approximately 130 undergraduate majors, and 40 minors. The department also offers courses in Truman’s Liberal Studies program, provides support classes for a number of pre-professional programs including the Masters in Education program.
