The Academic Advisor and Coordinator of University Tutoring works collaboratively to facilitate the academic success of students from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of needs. This position requires assisting in the design, delivery, and evaluation of academic support programs in the Student Success Center and across campus.

The position’s key responsibilities and essential functions include:


-Initiating contact and providing intrusive advising to student populations including, but not limited to, online graduate students and undergraduate students completing face-to-face programs remotely;

-Advising current and prospective online students on course selection, degree programs, and campus resources based on students’ interests, goals, needs, and degree progress;

-Guiding online students in developing success plans that include setting goals and identifying, planning for, and overcoming potential obstacles, and monitoring progress toward goals;

-Assisting online students with course registration;

-Monitoring online students’ academic progress and initiating contact to keep students on track;

-Making referrals to campus services based on students’ individual needs and interests and conducting timely follow-up with students;

-Responding to student queries in a timely manner;

-Facilitating one-on-one advising sessions with current and prospective online students;

-Participating in campus events;

-Participating in professional development activities to stay current on trends and best practices related to academic advising and student success in higher education;

-Collaborating with academic departments to help them meet the online advising needs of students in their areas;



-Keeping abreast of current research on learning, academic support strategies, and academic success;

-Recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising student tutors;

-Monitoring tutoring utilization rates;

-Promoting tutoring services across campus;

-Coordinating operations of the constituent programs in the Student Success Center with University tutoring, including the Writing Center and academic department tutoring;

-Delivering and documenting tutor training;

-Providing support as needed to college- and program-specific tutoring services;

-Providing a point of contact for faculty and staff who advise students and can offer program feedback;

-Assisting in the development and implementation of new programming in response to student needs and best practices research;

-Ensuring that services are scheduled appropriately to maximize student access, quality of service, and efficient use of budget and resources;

-Implementing best practices in tutoring services;

-Implementing and maintaining online tutoring services;

-Developing supplemental instruction programming;

-Coordinating peer-led study groups that partner with historically difficult courses and providing an interactive environment to assist students with course concepts and discuss learning strategies;

-Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

-Master’s degree in a liberal arts subject, Student Affairs, Education, Counseling or closely-related field

-Experience in higher education or college bound high school students

-Experience in academic advising or in student development counseling

-Experience with tutoring services

-Experience with online or non-traditional learners
