Using best practices for software development and project management, the Web Services Manager leads a small team deploying appropriate information technology to assist in solving the business and Web-based needs of the University. The manager leads the efforts related to web page design, content management systems, portal design, web hosting, web analytics, user experience design, and URL management.


Typical work responsibilities include but are not limited to:  installation, configuration, performance tuning, and maintenance of the web server infrastructure (WordPress, SQL Server, MySQL), mentoring web developers, web site design, authoring complex web pages, and search engine optimization.



  • Manage the operations of the Web Services team, including:
    1) Infrastructure and resource capacity
    2) Project and production support metrics
    3) Quality assurance review
    4) Assorted computer and network related tasks, such as installing, configuring and maintaining Web servers and services
  • Work closely with DBAs, System and Network Engineers to ensure Web server stability. Monitor health of servers and overall website environment.
  • Evaluate, recommend and introduce new technologies in support of University efforts. Advises senior management and negotiates requirements with vendors.
  • Responsible for the performance evaluation and skills assessment of Web Developers. Provide mentoring in general programming concepts, life cycle development and client consultation.
  • Act as an expert resource to the University functional areas. Meet with clients to identify project requirements, site enhancements and maintenance. Will have some project management duties. Serves as a project leader for moderate and large projects.
  • Develop task estimates and proposals. Create budget reports and related detail. Use project plans and schedules. Keep all groups informed of project progress.
  • Able to act as a departmental analytical resource to help others to solve complex technical problems.
  • Able to lead or coordinate work of a diversified staff in various environments, plans, schedules, assigning work, reviewing results, and written status and project plans. Able to perform a variety of highly complex tasks related to specialized inspection and testing of project output. Initiates corrective action for procedural, product or process deficiencies.
  • Develop site documentation and detailed technical specifications. Prepare detailed design specifications for programs and operations.
  • Document all work in accordance with development standards and procedures.  
  • Able to perform general production support tasks for all websites as well as new development.
  • Assists in web site design; Authors complex web pages.


Minimum required qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in a computer science or other technically-related field; or at least six years experience supporting website infrastructure and services  in a highly scalable enterprise-level framework; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient in html, JavaScript and Web Services.
  • Clear understanding of DNS and WordPress (with knowledge of IIS a plus).
  • Project Management and related skills. Maintain excellent time management practices.
  • Proficient with SQL Programming, Profiling and Performance tuning abilities, data modeling, optimization, and scripting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Ability to communicate with clients at all levels.
  • Excellent analytical skills.


Preferred qualifications: 

  • Expertise with WordPress is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Java, ASP, PHP, C# and AJAX a plus.
