The Office of International Education at Truman State University is looking for an International Student Advisor to perform a broad range of duties designed to meet the needs of international students and fulfill the reporting requirements of the institution. The position reports to the Executive Director of International Education and works to enhance the transition, integration and success of international students on campus.


The successful candidate is expected to perform the following duties:

  • Advise international students on academic, immigration and adjustment issues
  • Interpret and apply federal regulations and processes pertinent to F-1 & J-1 visa statuses
  • Report and maintain the SEVIS federal database for international students
  • Complete the SEVIS registration process for all F-1 and J-1 international students each semester
  • Serve as an F-1 Program Designated School Official (DSO) and a J-1 Program Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO)
  • Update instructions for student applications for various work permits and immigration changes
  • Develop orientation materials and processes for new international students
  • Advocate for the needs of international students
  • Plan and implement various multi-cultural programming
  • Work to make the Truman campus ‘international student friendly’
  • Monitor academic progress of international students and provide timely intervention and referrals as needed
  • Provide crisis management as needed
  • Coordinate the international student insurance program
  • Supervise student employees
  • Undertake professional development opportunities
  • Update international student web pages
  • Update international students via newsletter and social media
  • Undertake domestic and international travel if needed
  • Work weekend and evening hours when needed

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Must be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident and must be able to pass a background check

Programs: The Office of International Education encompasses the Center for International Students and the Center for International Education Abroad. The Center for International Students Education functions as both the international recruitment and admissions office and the center for international student advising and support. The Center for International Education Abroad facilitates short-term and semester study abroad experiences for Truman students.
